Vintage Film Friday: The Grand is the new home for McKay’s Photography and is a collaborative/shared space with Revival Vintage Rentals and Jane Vintage, located in Rochester’s historic South Wedge Neighborhood.
Here, you can see examples of my film photography work as well as select pieces on display from my recent travels to Africa (for sale!) as well as have your portrait taken. Yes, that’s right, I now have a photo studio & showroom!
So here is the backstory… (it’s a good one!)….
At the same time that Beth and I were meeting and becoming fast friends, I was consulting one of my favorite past Brides (Jodi – the Cinema Bride!) on a new event furniture rental/decor business called Revival Vintage Rentals.
Beth was looking to relocate/elevate her new business and Jodi was quickly outgrowing her storage unit. I was talking to them both, mentioning that if they found the right space, I might be interested in having a small photo studio. And then, one day, BAM!
One morning, we were texting and dreaming and drooling and Beth found an ad for space available in the highly desired South Wedge Neighborhood. Luckily, the landlord was available and she and I went to check it out. Once we walked into the space, I had to tell Beth about Jodi and then Jodi about Beth.
It all just fell together and the vision for the vintage collaboration, even the layout of the store, was worked out so effortlessly! We even have plans to eventually rent the space for small, private events, photo shoots, and host workshops.
The Grand is the name of the space at 389 Gregory Street, just next to the Tap & Mallet restaurant (my favorite!). We named it The Grand after researching South Wedge and the building’s history.
Fun Fact: this part of Gregory Street, as well as part of South Ave used to be called Grand Avenue back in the 19th century! Woah. Perfect. That’s how we came up with the name.
So, we branded the space itself The Grand and our three businesses (plus some consignment vendors) are all calling The Grand our collective home.
My darkroom is finished, so now I have a studio as well. Keep an eye out for special mini-portrait session events, classes, etc..
In the meantime, swing on by The Grand during Jane Vintage’s regular business hours of Tuesday through Saturday from 11-6. If you would like to visit with Jodi about her vintage furniture and decor rentals, or to book a family portrait with moi, please make an appointment.
And if you are playing along at home… yes, all of these images were captured on Fuji Film, using my beloved Mamiya RB67 Pro medium format film camera.
