Photographer Geek Out and Vacation in Mexico

This was a much needed vacation / photographer’s workshop / commercial architecture shoot… in sunny Mexico! There is nothing better than recharging my batteries before a wedding season, especially after not taking a vacation for two years (thank you, bathroom remodel!).

Tulum Mexico with photography by Heather McKayMy baby sister, Grace, planned this week long trip to Puerto Morelos Mexico to celebrate her 30th birthday, so we did just that. Except that she couldn’t celebrate…. she ruined the party by getting knocked up! Well, that’s one way to ring in your 30th birthday, Gracie. So Allana, Colleen and I celebrated for her. And she got a tan. Well, a tiger striped tan. The baby is now and forever nicknamed “El Tigre “(the tiger). Add to that, we saw Mexican Major League Baseball team El Tigres play in Cancun!

Our Aunt Colleen was once one of NYC’s top 5 Photographer’s Reps (like an actor’s agent, but for Photogs) and now she has retired and spends much of her time in Mexico. She has a house there and La Palapa on the beach about 20 minutes south of Cancun. I’ve been here several times over the years and every single time, I feel so lucky! Part of my rent was to take some professional images for her online listing that really shows the scale of the space. Well, lucky for me, the fish eye lens packs pretty light ;-).

Fellow Greener Photography member and good friend, the amazingly smart and talented Ms. Allana Taranto, came along for the journey and so it was part Photographer Workshop. We spent every evening, with Colleen and without, discussing branding, marketing, hurdles, accolades, publicity, wedding albums, websites, wedding workflow, world domination plans and eco-friendly business practices.Puerto Morelos Mexico with photography by Heather McKay

I’m not going to lie. It was all pretty amazing. The only *real* item on the to-do list was to swim every day. done and done.

Of course, we did go down to Tulum for a night or two and walked around the Mayan ruins at Tulum and Muyil, hung out at the Papaya Playa (excellent topless swimming/bathing), swam in several Cenotes (fresh water sink holes)… but most days, we just walked on the beach, swam in the ocean and talked shop.

If you are interested in renting La Palapa, Colleen rents the home year round and it sleeps up to 6 adults. I’ll let the images speak for themselves, however here is a link to the rental online.

Here is how Allana saw the Mayan Riviera.
